Attachments!!!Attachments!!! Attachments!!!

What a beautiful and attractive word! Word loaded with meaning both positive and negative.  I have heard, read and have written it very often. I assumed and took for granted that I knew the meaning and significance of it till one day my friend narrated his disastrous life story of being attached to material world and things. I became aware of it that being attached to things, persons, power, money, positions, food and cravings can lead us to a point from where very few persons return to original self. This friend of mine began his career with just 400 INR in his pocket, Began with odd and small paid works. But the craze and desire to get more never died but always on the rise. Days into months, months into years brought him success after success at the cost of losing himself into attachments. Not being aware of the evil power of the attachment slowly which engulfed him completely. The desire to have more led him to compromise all the moral values and that brought him to a stage of losing his conscience. The hunger for power increased and his wealth and prosperity won accolades among the friends. The so called well wishers increased and he was floating in the false praise and appreciation offered to him by short term friends who only wanted to enjoy his wealth and freebees. His attachments to the power took away his faith, the love of the family, children hardly respected him. He knew he possessed al but felt empty within. He never heard a loving word from the family and attachment could not give him that love. He broke down in despair. Friends led him to evil ways. Temporary and short lived happiness never lasted. He invited many unwanted guests in his life like spiritual, physical and Psychological sicknesses. He ended being lonely man in his mansion. No one around him to touch, the possession looked at him but could not offer the human touch. All attachments began to take full control of his life. He had to decide about them otherwise he would end up in disaster. He was holding on and hanging on it. Then the inner voice cried and said, “let go, let go”. It was a most difficult decision to make and it took him pretty long time. At the end he was liberated man but had no one around him, even those who ate and drank, danced and sang with him, He decided that no more attachments but detachment that will bring happiness.
How strong is the temptation to attachments. It makes us crazy and mad. Little is never enough though it gives us peace and happiness. But still run after possessions and attach ourselves madly. Many have lost human relationships and friendships due to their over attachment to material things.
